Global goals
The core of this system uses a micro:bit to integrate sensors and control ultraviolet (UV) light for disinfecting restroom environments. We have designed an embedded light sensor within the door handle that activates UV light to disinfect the handle after someone touches it. We apply the same concept to monitor toilet usage and disinfect the toilet after each use. Additionally, an infrared sensor is installed above the faucet to detect when a user finishes washing their hands, triggering UV light to disinfect the faucet. This approach not only maintains restroom cleanliness but also effectively reduces germ transmission through contact.
Compared to chemical disinfectants like alcohol or bleach, using UV light for physical disinfection avoids environmental pollution and enhances public health, promoting environmental sustainability. By using micro:bit to integrate various sensors and control UV light for disinfection, this system can be applied to public restrooms and other shared spaces, significantly reducing the risk of virus transmission through contact. The system’s automatic detection and UV disinfection features also reduce the need for manual cleaning, cut costs on chemical disinfectants, and help prevent cross-infection of contagious diseases, strengthening the foundation of public health. Switching to UV light disinfection is also an environmentally friendly approach, supporting our efforts toward sustainable environmental development.
